What is Ketamine Assisted Therapy?
Ketamine Assisted Therapy or KAT is a combination of traditional ketamine infusion therapy with talk therapy. The synergy of the two can dramatically improve the benefits and duration of ketamine alone. The therapy involves preparation before an infusion followed by processing and integration sessions after the fact with a therapist.
KAT allows for insight and perspective from the experience of an altered state of consciousness. Its effects on mood can help to break harmful patterns or habits and invite healthier ways of coping into your life.
Preparation
I offer preparation sessions to guide clients as they prepare for ketamine infusions. We can discuss any number of feelings including uncertainty, anxiety, excitement and anticipation about upcoming infusions. I cover calming techniques and tips for how to mentally prepare for and set intentions leading up to the infusions.
Integration and Processing
After infusions have begun, I meet with patients periodically to unpack the experience and to discuss in depth any emotions or memories the treatment has brought up. There is a wide range of material that can surface during infusions, and every person has a unique response to the medication. These responses range from challenging emotions, traumatic memories to fascinating hallucinations and mystical or transcendent experiences. We also set goals and discuss ways to make use of the antidepressant period and increased mental flexibility to make ongoing changes that will lead to durable benefits.
In-Person Sessions
Therapy sessions are performed in collaboration with the physicians of the Ketamine Wellness Clinic of Orange County (ketamineoc.com). Their experience and expertise in administering ketamine infusions are essential components of this healing modality. Through this collaboration we strive to improve your experience and healing journey. In-person sessions will be held at their office in Laguna Beach.
